New Entrepreneurs: welcome
Three new companies registered themselves in April this year at the trade register of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Paramaribo. Three companies from the Netherlands with managers from the Surinamese Diaspora. They bring new knowledge and capacities and new networks of economic cooperation.

E-Club Suriname: trade initiative from sports
Mid-September this year the E-Club Suriname was established, the Exportersclub of Suriname, for those that are interested to export to the Dutch Antilles. It is the counterpart of the E-Club Curacao. It all started with the participation of walkers (‘jolly walkers’) from Curacao in the annual four-day evening walking march in Paramaribo. From walking came eco-tourism, and from that commerce.
Government/Private sector: still unclear partners
Minister Van Ravenswaay held a lecture at the annual meeting of the employers organisation VSB on the subject of the position of the Private Sector in the process of the formulation of national policy. The Vice-president of the organisation, Lo Fo Sang, gave his vision on government economic policy. Two position and no discussion. When will the constructive cooperation and discussion between these social partners start?
Transformation process out of the tension from ideas and daily challenges
There is a day-to-day dimension of transformation above the ideas of what should be done for adapting organisations to the global situation. It are the daily choices by managers that determine the effectiveness of companies to confront the challenges of rapidly changing circumstances. “It demand a high degree of flexibility by managers,” states Kathleen Lieuw-Kie-Song, Managing Director van NV Uniblue Shipping,.
The isolation of our region
The American minister of Foreign Affairs, Condoleezza Rice, warned the ministers of Foreign Affairs of the CARICOM, that the American government is not interested in the region on its own, it should be lobbied on interested issues by the regional governments themselves. So what will the CARICOM lobby for at the US-government?
Training for ‘Good Governance’
At the FHR Lim A Po Institute for Social Studies the second MPA course (Master of Public Administration) started on the 2nd of October 2006. Annually about 60 students graduate from this Institute: 30 with a MBA- and 30 with a MPA certificate, mostly Surinamese. In this way Suriname gets its professionals by the initiative of a dedicated individual.
Regional integration is a painful process
Prof. dr.Ludger Künhardt gave a lecture –on September 25th - at the FHR Lim A Po Institute of Social Studies on European Integration: its history and current challenges. He emphasized that integration was always a result of a crisis (first at the end of the Second World War, and now integrating ever new members with an aging population, and with a challenged state of competitiveness) and that in itself integration is an ‘never ending story’
Transformation demands in-depth analysis, courage and vision
Danny Lo Fo Sang, Vice-President of the Suriname Trade and Industry Association, defines several processes that society has to go through to transform itself into a modern just society: to get rid of an authoritarian past; to change government departments into effective and productive organisations: to study in-depth the current social-economic and political processes and to develop a vision of itself as productive partner in a globalized world .

Transformation by the way of progressing insight
• Transformation is not an unequivocal concept. It has to do with change, but with fundamental change. When you start a process of transformational change you know the start but not the end. At the same time, even if you wouldn’t like to change you will find yourself suddenly changed with your environment. So how to manage transformation?
